Imagine

Tuesday was baby D’s last baby sign language class. It was kind of sad since he has been around the same babies for 2 months and won’t see them anymore, but maybe if I put him in the next session we’ll see some of them again. Hubby laughed at me when I showed him baby D’s diploma from the class. He said ‘yeah you did really well in the class, but I don’t see him having learned much’. It’s true. I think I have a range of 50-60 words that I can sign and baby D’s maybe signed 1. Oh well, we’ll just keep plugging away and eventually I’m sure I’ll be thrilled that we persevered.

Yesterday after my parenting group, I stopped by work to talk about my intentions of extending my maternity leave. Hubby and I have decided that I will stay off until the beginning of July, work the 2 weeks before the summer while he takes holidays and stays home with baby D. Then I go back full time in August and we (unfortunately) find daycare for the little guy. This way I still have some money coming in and I don’t have to worry about care. It was a nice visit strangely enough. I ended up staying for like 2½ hours which is unusual since I usually don’t like being there very long. There may be a bit of a bonus for me – if I’m lucky. Lyn (Office Administrator – my immediate boss) wondered if I would be getting vacation pay and when, so my principal got on the phone and called around for me and ended up leaving a message for someone to get back to me. I got that call last night and it sounds like I’ve got 29 vacation days left and that I could use them, BUT (you knew there was a snag coming right?) that it would be up to the principal’s discretion because for me to use them he would need to pay my replacement out of the school budget instead of the board paying. Doug (principal) and I are fairly close, but I really don’t know if he’d be willing to do this for me. I think hubby and I are going to go in on Monday and talk it out and see if there’s any way of having that bit of extra money come in. It would be SO great if we could, but I’m trying not to rely on it. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I’ll leave you with my newest obsession. For those of you who don’t watch American Idol, this is 17-year-old David Archuleta’s version of Imagine by John Lennon. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but the more I hear it the more I love it. Enjoy.

Weekend Snapshot

Yesterday we made the trek up to Orillia to visit hubby’s mom for her birthday. Actually her birthday was last weekend, but my dad was curling so we were carless. (I really need to get a car!) The snow this winter’s been a bitch, but nothing compared to what I saw up north! Sort of puts things in perspective for me. I’m usually not to crazy about going up as I find it fairly boring. Unlike my family, there is very little conversation. I’m not a very social person so I certainly don’t help in that respect. So when hubby volunteered to go pick up KFC for dinner and his sister and niece said they wanted to go too, all I could think was that the dreaded silence between his mom and me might swallow me alive. It ended up not being nearly as bad as I thought. It’s definitely easy to talk about the baby, plus she went on about all the concerts she’s seen at Casino Rama, so the time flew by. We all managed to gorge ourselves on chicken only to forget about the 3 cakes that hubby brought from work. It’s handy for get-togethers, but mostly it’s just evil that my husband delivers for a pastry company. It was an extremely long and interrupted day for the baby so I was happy when we finally got home around 21:30. As exhausted as we both were we ended up staying up to watch the Academy Awards, though hubby was snoring on the couch before any of the important awards were presented. I was disappointed to see that Juno didn’t win anything monumental, but figured that it probably wasn’t mainstream enough. Great movie. If you haven’t seen it do. And check out the soundtrack too. It’s very quirky.

First tooth
[flickr]photo:2278861812[/flickr]

Baby D cut his first tooth! Finally. He just turned 10 month old and this is the first. I gave up checking for teeth a while ago, but Saturday afternoon he grabbed my finger and went to suck on it. The sharp little ridges of the tooth actually scared me since I wasn’t expecting anything but gums. Sucking my fingers isn’t something he normally does, so it was almost like he wanted to show me that it was there.

Yesterday was a brand new holiday here. It was “Family Day”. It’s a nice idea I think. I mean there is nothing but miserable snow from Christmas to Easter with nothing to look forward to in between. So to celebrate the day we (my Dad, me, hubby, baby, brother & sister-in-law) got together for lunch at Swiss Chalet (oooh aaaah). I was ready to invite everyone back to our place to play a board game or something, but before I got the chance, my brother asked us back to his place to watch The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Hubby said that it hadn’t gotten great reviews so I wasn’t expecting much, but despite being fairly slow I found it quite interesting. It was a nice day spent with family and I especially loved watching my brother with baby D. Not having any kids of his own and not having any access to any it was cute watching him try to entertain my son.
