Back to work
backtowork

After a sweet 2 week holiday (spent at the exotic…home) I am finally going back to work tomorrow. Feels like I just left, I’m not really sure where the time went. I will say that it was relaxing though.
So I will rewind back to New Year’s Eve when my Dad took us out to dinner. We went to my favourite chinese restaurant Imperial Buffet. I had made the reservation the day before for 5 o’clock and thank goodness I did. You should have seen the mob of people we passed on our way out who were waiting to get seated. We always tend to get to a restaurant as early as we can for little D‘s sake. There is always less of a crowd and we can still get him home in plenty of time to have a decent bedtime. When we got home we opened our Christmas presents – yes we had not opened our gifts from dad or vice versa. Little D had pooped out when opening his gifts on Christmas day so I decided to cut things short and figured we would try again when he was more interested. In fact, he didn’t open his last gift until yesterday afternoon!
Saturday we drove to Paris (no not that Paris) to meet up with my Mum and do a little shopping at Mary Maxim. It’s one of the few great places left to buy good yarn so I go there whenever I get the urge to start a new project (thought I don’t tend to finish as many as I start). My new knitting project is going to be a prayer shawl for my retiring Principal who is moving on to become a pastor. I’m not totally sure it is appropriate as they are usually used for grieving or ill people who need prayers, but I figured he would at least see the thought behind the gift. While I was there I picked up an origami kit I had my eye on, and finally splurged and bought 2 cross stitch kits that I have been looking at for a while.

I have already started on the hands which will be for little D and then I’ll do the feet which will be for baby x.
The biggest news of the holiday is that I managed to get little D potty trained! Okay, not 100%, but pretty close. With the exception of the first night (Monday) he has been sleeping right through the night and waking up in the morning dry, which I think is really incredible. He hasn’t been in diapers since waking up Monday morning and since Tuesday, has only had 5 accidents. Now we’re still having issues pooping on the potty, but peeing seems to be a done deal. I think he daycare teacher is going to be thrilled. I just went out today to get him more underpants so that he will have a supply at daycare instead of diapers. They’re so cute too. I mean they don’t have anyone special on them like spiderman or anything, they’re just so small. I had to get him an XXS, but they’re still a wee bit too big for him. I am prouder than proud can be. I’ve heard the horror stories about how long it can take and all the pull-ups and bed wetting, but I just got him to throw away all his diapers (just figuratively, I’ve still got them bagged up for the next one) and told him that this was it, he’d have to do his best to get to the potty to do his business or he’d have wet underpants. You never cease to amaze me kid, you make me proud!

To Potty Train or not to Potty Train…That is the Question

pottyPhew, the craziness of Christmas is finally over! Okay, it wasn’t that bad, just exhausting. Christmas Eve we went to the Family Service at church. It was really well done and really included the little ones. I think that’ll have to be a tradition we continue from year to year. Christmas morning we dragged little D out of bed around 8:30 jingling bells and telling him that Santa had been there and that he had presents to open. He replied by saying “under my tree?”. Not really grasping the concept of Christmas he quickly became distracted and much to my husband’s dismay I called a halt to the proceedings with unopened gifts still under the tree. I mean there’s hardly any point in rushing the kid through opening his gifts when he’d much rather throw the paper over his head. Besides, we had to be in the car by 10:30 to get over to my Aunt’s house for 1:00 for my family’s gathering. It was really nice getting together as we don’t get much of a chance to see everyone (Aunt, Uncle, 3 cousins, Gran, Mum, Dad, Brother & his wife) and certainly not all at once. We are generally a loud boisterous family and this gathering was no exception. I miss it, and wish we could all get together more often. I made my big announcement (the pregnancy) via little D‘s shirt: “I’m going to be a big brother”. I’m all about the theatrics. We were going out for dinner this year (we used to go out years ago but have stayed home with turkey for the last say 20 years) instead of having my Gran cook for everyone. I liked this idea since my Gran always gets a bit frantic before hand and is constantly checking her watch worried about getting the food ready on time. It’s just not very relaxed, so I think going out was a much better choice. I mean she is 88, she should enjoy Christmas and not be worried about feeding everyone. At dinner everyone was super impressed at how well behaved little D was. I think I sometimes take that for-granted. He just is like that all the time. It really hit home when a kid much older than mine was shrieking at the top of his lungs about something and for a good 5-10 minutes before his parents bothered to do anything!
On to day two of our Christmas traveling. This time we were off to see his family. I sort of dread going up to see them only because it is so opposite of my family. Most of the time with my family you can’t get a word in edgewise and there is certainly never a dull moment. With his family there is only his Mom, sister and niece and certainly they are not even close to rowdy like my family can be. Even just visiting my Mum, we are constantly talking. Being around his family I feel this uncomfortable need to fill the silence, but I’m just not that social, so it’s just uncomfortable. This was no exception, and when you considered that we got there around 1:00 and didn’t go out to eat until 5:30 it made for a long day. When we got to the restaurant for our buffet dinner, we were told that they weren’t running the buffet that night. We were all pretty ticked off since the reservation had been made with that stipulation. We ended up getting 10% off our meals if we stayed and ordered from the menu, so that was at least something. I was starting to think I was on an episode of Hell’s Kitchen seeing as our meals took about 40 minutes to arrive. By the time we finished dinner and made the long drive home it was 9:30. I told hubby that next time we have to insist on an earlier dinner for little D‘s sake. Even though he sleeps all the way home in the car, it’s still a really long day.
Today was a total veg day. I really wanted to take little D to see a movie, but hubby didn’t want to go today “it’ll be too busy, you know how I hate crowds…”. Though I could have taken him myself, I thought it would be a nice family outing, so hopefully we’ll be going tomorrow. Although…part of me is thinking I should be trying to potty train starting tomorrow. Little D is going to be 3 in April, and I think it’s time, despite hubby thinking he’s too young. Anyone have any thought, comments, suggestions on the subject? Possibly like a shmuck I bought one of those potty-training guides off the Internet which make me believe that I can have him totally trained in 3 days or less. Am I kidding myself? I’m actually kind of nervous about it. What if he’s totally defiant about the whole thing? The guide says that once you start you should not stop or it’ll just confuse the kid and make it that much harder when you go to try again later. Isn’t there some potty-training school I could just send him off too, like doggy obedience school or something?

Merry Christmas to Me

christmasIt’s just occurred to me that I’ve been rather out of control when it comes to online shopping lately. It’s not like I’ve won the lottery or anything, I guess it’s just lack of self-control. Usually my frugal self will argue with my self-gratifying self and eventually win. But I suppose my frugal self has either been inundated with hormones, or maybe even gone on holidays. Either way I’ve been getting quite a few packages in the mail lately, and I thought I’d share what I got.
So it all started with the 120 palette that I bought off ebay. Though I like it, I think it might just be a bit too extreme for a subtle makeup gal like me, so I ventured over to Coastal Scentsto get the warm palette and a few inexpensive brushes. Then it was on to Everyday Minerals to finally get the stuff out of my wishlist: a flat top bush, 2 full sized foundations, 1 full sized blush, and a whole bunch of sample sized goodies including eyeshadow and brow colours. Shortly after that I saw a coupon code to get a free travel set of makeup from EyesLipsFace so I thought I would check it out. I ended up getting: an eyelash curler, nail polish, lipstick, lipgloss, eyebrow kit and 3 waterproof eyeliner pens. If you’ve ever checked out their stuff it’s ridiculously inexpensive, but when you slap Canadian shipping on it, it’s not such a great deal, so I probably won’t buy from them again. Besides, my wonderful free travel set had 2 smashed eyeshadows which of course had to be black and silver and covered all the other shadows, blushes and lip glosses to to point where I probably won’t be able to use any of them.
Away from the makeup purchases the last online indulgence came after reading Jenn’s post about EdenFantasys. I couldn’t believe the selection of toys. Have to admit it made me drool a little. I admit, I went a little wild in my order as I got 1, 2, 3 toys, some toy cleaner and a lock box for the toys (oh so important in a house with little eyes).
As for offline purchases, I got an Iomega 1T external drive to use for system backups and hopefully videos that I’ll be making with our new Canon FS200. The camcorder is a gift between hubby and me. It’s something that we both wanted and instead of getting each other little inconsequential things, we opted for the one bigger gift and will leave it at that. Besides, I think since little D is 2½ now, Christmas is mostly about him. Besides, with all the money I’ve unconsciously spent on myself, I definitely don’t need any more stuff.
