What a messed up weekend! My poor little man has had a rough couple of days. Thursday night he started to get feverish, but we managed to get it down with some Tylenol. Friday I got the dreaded call from daycare, but they didn’t need me to come and get him, they were just telling me that his temperature was 100°C and it was okay for them to give him Tylenol. Saturday afternoon after his nap his temp spiked to 104°C and I took him to Emerg to see what was going on. On the way over he vomited several times so sitting in the waiting room was a treat reeking of puke. I ended up throwing out the dollar store mittens that he managed to fill with vomit. Ewww. When we were finally seen the doctor had a look into his ears and immediately saw the problem. Baby D was suffering from an ear infection. I didn’t doubt his expertise, but I was surprised since he hadn’t been rubbing his ears or anything. We filled the prescription for Amoxicillin and went home to relax. We started his meds that night, but he managed to throw up shortly thereafter so we just left it for the following day.
Sunday morning I got up late, but found hubby cuddling a sleeping baby D on the couch. Since it was only 9:30 I was surprised that he was asleep as naptime isn’t till at least 10:30/11:00. At least he had managed to eat breakfast and get some meds into him and no vomiting. BUT… when hubby and I looked at him he was covered in angry red welts! WTF?! Luckily the children’s clinic was just about to open so we rushed him over to be seen and were told that this seemed to be a reaction to the Amoxicillin. I found this strange since he’s had it before, but apparently that’s not unusual. We promptly threw out the meds and were given a new prescription to now get rid of the hives.
Strangely the welts seemed to fade before we even got the new stuff into him, but when we woke up this morning you’d think that we had beaten him overnight! Yesterday I was all set to get him a medic alert bracelet alerting emergency personnel that he was allergic to penicillin. After getting ourselves squeezed in to see baby D’s pediatrician this afternoon, he thinks it’s possible that he is allergic, but that it’s also possible that it’s a coincidence and that there’s something else causing the hives. So I just have to keep on with the new stuff we got from the clinic. What a mess! We originally got meds to treat the fever and ear infection, now we’re no longer even worried about anything but the hives that were the result of treating those problems. Go figure!

Just got back from a miserable day in Barrie. It was a grey rainy day before we started out and it never really got much better. We went up to belatedly celebrate hubby’s birthday which was June 5th with his family and his sister’s friends. One of the friends brought her 3 daughters along and with our niece who is generally moody they were all miserable by the time we arrived. They had gone up early to make sure we got a shelter, and had been there like 3 hours before we got there. On the way up we stopped to get burgers for everyone as instructed by hubby’s mom. When we arrived she said that she only told him to bring our own food, but he swore that twice she said that we should bring the burgers. That pissed us both off because we wouldn’t have stopped and spent money we didn’t need to otherwise.

We did use the Baby Buzz patch on baby D and between the super smelly patch and hubby and I swatting away the pesky skeeters, I don’t think the baby got any bites at all. Wish I were as lucky. About 10 minutes after I arrived I got a bit bite on my forehead. That I am aware of, I got 3 on my hands (including one right beside the nail on my pinky finger), 1 on my forehead, 3 on my ankle and tons on the backs of my thighs. Talk about itchy!!!

Eventually after we ate the rain stopped so we went on a little walk around the park to view the animals. We saw an albino raccoon, a bear, wolves, foxes and various raptors. It was so sad though, the poor wolves were just running around in circles and obviously had been for some time since the ground under them was all sunken in. I was told that all these animals had been rescue animals, but I wonder if any of them would’ve chosen death over this captivity. Poor animals.

I was hoping to be home by eight since it’s my first day back at work tomorrow, but as usual I couldn’t pry him away from everyone and it was after 21:30 by the time we got home. I’m surprised I’m even writing this – I should be in bed! So I’m off to hopefully get a good night sleep before tomorrow.

Yes, I’m gearing up for the end of the year (school year) madness. Even though I’m not back at work yet, I still have a bunch of stuff to do. Like tomorrow night is my school’s grad. Even though I haven’t been there for over a year, I promised the students that I would be back to announce the grads as they walk across the stage. This has always been my thing, and I really enjoy doing it. Besides they always seem to have a problem finding someone who can say some of the names. For instance Sathananthalingam is just the last name of one of our students. Her first name is still 12 characters long. I don’t seem to have much difficulty in saying these names so I’m always called upon when there’s a long name like that to pronounce. Then on Thursday is our end of the year staff breakfast. Even though I went last year, I think I’m going to beg off this year. I don’t really want to sit through all the goodbyes of staff I don’t really care about or know. Besides I anticipate it being difficult keeping a little guy who is *almost* walking still for like 4 hours. It’ll probably be more trouble than it’s worth and frankly I don’t care that much.

My mum was down for a couple of days and we had a really nice visit. This was the first time she stayed for more than one night. We decided the last time she was here that it didn’t make much sense to just stay for one night because it was all so rushed. We really didn’t do much. We managed to get out for a long walk and admire other people’s front gardens. It gave me all sorts of ideas for mine. And we had my brother and his wife over for dinner Saturday night. They left around 21:00 and my mum, dad, hubby and I stayed up till 23:00 talking about baby D and his birth. Even though it wasn’t that long ago (14 months) there were a couple things I had actually forgotten. I love reminiscing! Yesterday we went to church together and then came home and finally hung up some pictures I’ve been meaning to get on my walls. I will still have to get some more pictures as I have a humongous wall in my family room that could use some lovin’.

This time next Monday I will be at work. I am trying desperately not to think about it for fear that I will lose my mind. It’s only for 2 weeks; 9 days in fact so I’m sure I can do that. The worst will be when baby D goes into daycare and it’s a full time arrangement. If hubby was staying home with baby D the whole time as we had planned I probably wouldn’t be as nervous, but my Dad will be watching him for 3 days. I’m sure it doesn’t sound like a big deal, but he’s old-school German and tends to have his own way of doing things and criticizing mine. I guess I’m just afraid that he’ll be letting baby D scream himself to sleep or feeding him large chunks of stuff that he might choke on or possibly being too rough on him. I’ll just have to keep thinking happy thoughts that everything will go fine or I’m going to make myself sick thinking about it.

Well, I certainly never expected to be away quite so long. My computer has been so sluggish that I sometimes even regret turning the darn thing on. It’s been keeping me from blogging because it’s just so painful to type a sentence and wait for the text to appear long after I’ve finished. Today it seems to be on it’s best behaviour so I thought it was time to get right back to it.

Hubby has had a number of tests all of which have come back negative. His doctor noticed a bit of a spot on his lungs in an x-ray he had done and gave him antibiotics to clear up what could’ve been a lung infection or a case of walking pneumonia. Between the antibiotics and time he’s feeling much better.

I’ve been feeling pretty low lately. Even though I managed to lose 5 pounds my waistline has somehow exploded. The new pants that I just bought are really snug and I can’t figure out why. Summer is such a crappy time for my self esteem because I’d like to strip down to a bathing suit without feeling embarrassed, but I just can’t do it. My parenting group just had our very last group yesterday, and plan to meet at Lynn’s house next Friday to socialize and go for a swim. I would LOVE to get baby D in the pool again because he loves the water, but I just feel too fat to even think about getting into a bathing suit! I hate feeling this way. I just wish I could accept my body for what it is and not feel so self conscious about it!

One thing that I’ve done in the last little while to make me feel slightly better about myself is to get into makeup. I generally don’t wear anything but lipgloss unless it’s a special occasion – and those are very few and far between. I did some searching on the Internet for some ideas and came across this site. Talk about comprehensive! I’m such a dummy when it comes to makeup and for some reason I’m sort of afraid of it I guess. Like I never know what shade of foundation to get. I’m so clueless. But this site gives you so much information! So I learned how to select a foundation based on skin type, and colour, when to get rid of foundation (guess the foundation I bought 8 years ago will have to go in the garbage), as well as coverage types. I like that under each of the coverage types (ie. tinted moisturizers) there is a list of specific products that fit in that category. Then at the bottom of the page are a linked list of makeup brands (ie. Cover Girl) that you can go to to see individual products and buy them right there. It’s definitely a site worth a look-see for all kinds of great information and application tips.

Baby D is 14 months old today and though he looks like he’ll be walking any day now I’m not sure what to say about his verbal skills. I’m trying really hard not to compare him with any other babies and to remember that all babies do their thing in their own time, but shouldn’t he be doing more than just babbling ‘dada’? I’ve been trying to baby sign language with him and so far the only sign he sort of does is ‘more’ but it’s really just clapping and not the actual sign. He really doesn’t communicate with us in any way. He’s such a happy, easy baby, but should he be farther along in development?

It has been an absolutely bizarr-o week. Hubby has been home due to illness and has totally thrown off my schedule! I don’t know what it is, but when he’s home we both just get so lazy. He drives for a living, so when he’s being plagued by chest pains and dizzyness it’s not really a good idea to have him behind the wheel. I’m quite ticked off at his doctor at the moment. He went in to see her on Monday and had tests done – blood tests and an ECG, and was told that the results would be in by the end of the week and that we’d hear back when they were in. As of yesterday there was no word so being his “secretary” I called to find out what the deal was. I left a message in the morning to have the doctor call us back and found out that she was working until 16:00. By 15:35 without a call I called back to see what was going on. Left another message and was told that the doctor usually returned calls after business hours. Wanna guess? Yup. No call back again. So once again I call back and leave a message on the machine stating that I’d called and left 2 messages, that neither were returned and that we still didn’t know the outcome of the tests and he still wasn’t feeling any better. So this morning I got a call back from the receptionist to tell me that they don’t give results over the phone, that if no call is made then we are to assume that everything is okay, and that the doctor wasn’t in today. Okay, if tests were done for a yearly physical exam then don’t call me back when everything is fine (even though my doctor does), but when someone comes in complaining of chest pains, dizzyness and lethargy a call back should be made. Besides the doctor told hubby that if the tests came back negative then he would be back in ASAP for more tests as there was clearly something going on. WTF?! So instead of the doctor doing her job I now have hubby becoming Dr. Google and he has decided that he has Aortic Dissection, the same thing that John Ritter died of but was misdiagnosed. The worst part now is that his boss has called him back in to work because they’re so short staffed right now. I hope everything goes okay tomorrow. I keep telling him to take it slow and easy and to pull over and relax whenever necessary, but he’s a man and rarely listens to anything I have to say.

So I did some tidying up and vacuuming already, I’m now just waiting for baby D to wake up from his nap. There is a lot I want to get done today… I’ll start off by picking up the GrowPure bottle I’ve been seeing advertised everywhere. I am sick to death of hearing about all the health risks attached to bottles these days and figured I’m better off getting something I know is safe. Unfortunately for me the bottle is going to cost me $17.99 +tax here. That’s a lot of money to spend on a bottle as far as I’m concerned, but I guess I justify it by the fact that it’s like 3 bottles in 1.

My next stop will be Wal-Mart where I’ll be looking at the plant situation to see what they have and if the price is right. When my Mum comes down tomorrow, I want to have a game plan of where we’re going to be getting my plants. The other thing that has been driving me nuts is the number of dandelions in my lawn! Before my Dad went to Germany, we were out weeding but you’d never know it to look at the lawn now. So instead of the old yank method, I’m going to see about getting a proper weeder.

Finally, the joy that is grocery shopping is my final stop. I need to get regular stuff for our consumption as well as stuff for dinner tomorrow night. I was hoping we’d just do hamburgers on the barbeque which is simple, but apparently we don’t have enough propane. I’ll have to see in my travels what it’s going to cost me for another tank. Let hubby get ours refilled himself. I always find certain trips difficult with baby D, but it has to get done so I manage. I just won’t be lugging a propane tank around anywhere with him. Or pick up the earth that I need from the landscaping place. Those are sans-baby jobs.

Hope all you Moms and Moms-to-be out there have a fantastic day!

My Mother’s Day started at six this morning when I heard baby D wake up. Hubby bolted out of bed to get to the bathroom before the little guy really started wailing. Six o’clock is really early even for baby D and before hubby went to check on him he was quiet again. I managed to sleep in until about 8:15 (only 45min longer than a regular day) and then went looking for my boys. I expected hubby to be on the computer, but he wasn’t. In front of the tv? Nope. My little boy was in the dining room in his highchair and daddy was no where to be seen. As I walked towards the kitchen I saw him “hiding” in the bathroom ready to pounce. I told him that that was no way to start my day – with a heart attack.

He really came through for me this year and managed to remember something I said that I wanted and 2 great cards. The first card was from baby D and the little guy even “signed” it. The the card from hubby:

For My Wife on Mother’s Day
You’re everything special a wife and mother could be.
I’m thinking about how lucky I am to be married to you, because you’re all that I could ever want in a wife. You’re my friend, my confidante, the one who always loves me, and the one who supports all my efforts. You mean more to me than words can say…
Today, I’m also thinking about what a special mother you are, and how happy it makes me to know that the wonderful woman I love is also the best mother a child could have.
Happy Mother’s Day and All My Love

Okay, so he didn’t write the card, but it was so beautiful I had to share it. My gift was a keychain photoviewer. I really wanted one around Christmas time but couldn’t seem to find any. The best part of the gift is that he actually remembered something that I wanted that I didn’t have to hint about.

[flickr]photo:2483349807[/flickr] [flickr]photo:2484167952[/flickr]

We were supposed to be going to the zoo today as the last bit of my day, but the weather is so yucky (windy and cold) that I have opted to stay in and watch movies and maybe order a pizza. Once again to the Moms out there, have a happy day!

I finally managed to get my butt back out for a walk. It’s been a while now (maybe 2 weeks) since I last walked. I was all gungho there for a bit, but lately I’ve just been making excuses. In my defense it has been raining for a couple of days and it’s been cool (not like I didn’t get out when it was snowing), so I easily talked myself out of it. So while I was out with my little guy I made a point of checking out people’s gardens. Though we’ve done some work already, our house really needs a lot more help. I got to thinking about all the jobs I’d like to do around here. Some of which I’d love to have done before my Dad gets back from Germany. Our lawn needs some serious lovin’ as it is sad and patchy. We have already added grass seed to it and it seems to be growing, but I had always envisioned baby D walking or crawling through the beautiful lush green backyard. It is hardly that at the moment. I feel like I may turn into Hank Hill (of King of the Hill) with his obsession for his lawn. I nearly shrieked when I saw the dandelions popping up out back. Much work to be done. Also this place is in desperate need of plants. Unfortunately since we just moved in in October we have no real idea of what plants are already planted. My Dad left us $80.00 to buy plants and we have 2 big black urns, 6 window boxes and a few different sized pots that need filling. As well I want to get a couple of hanging baskets for around the garage. The other thing I’ve been wanting to do is plant a tree for baby D and to commemorate our new home. I’ve got to do some research on that one though. We already have a whole bunch of trees and I just want something relatively small. Part of the problem in the backyard is that the tree roots are sprouting through the lawn. Maybe tomorrow, depending on what hubby has planned we’ll get out to a garden centre and check things out.

I just got home from another enjoyable Parenting Group session. Even though we do have an agenda for each session we tend to do a whole lot of socializing. I really love these women! I’m not a very out-going person and had to really push myself to even attend my first few sessions. It feels so comfortable and look forward to seeing everyone every week. In my day to day life I feel isolated, but that’s just me not being social. I really don’t have any friends, just people I like that I work with pretty much. They would get together but I guess I give off some sort of air or something because (with the exception of a group that has now fallen apart) they never seem to invite me along. When I was moving back in October, I’d only been attending this Parenting Group for all of like 3 weeks when 2 ladies offered to help me pack or look after baby D so that it would be easier for me to pack. That’s just the kind of women we’re talking about here. Something I’m really not used to. In the past, and we’re talking about the 9th/10th grade here, I had best friends who all disappeared when I was going through a rough patch because apparently I was too moody. Isn’t that exactly when you need your friends?! Yeah, mine dumped me. I guess I never really got over it. Since then I have had a couple of friends who’ve just used my friendship and never reciprocated. I’d say I’ve become pretty bitter about the whole idea of friendship and now find myself wary of what the other person wants from me. Unfortunately I won’t be able to keep going to this group once I go back to work since they meet Thursday mornings from 9-11. I’m hoping that when they get together for the odd dinner out that they’ll remember me.

When I’m attending my group, I put baby D in the nursery with a sitter who also looks after a couple of other kids as well. When I picked him up after today’s group the sitter handed me a craft that she would’ve done with the other kids. It was a can covered in construction paper with 2 construction paper flowers sticking out attached to straws. The flowers said ‘Happy Mother’s Day’. Awwwh. I just think that is the coolest thing ever! I have to admit that I was a little disappointed last year with my very first Mother’s Day. Hubby’s just become so complacent with special days. I got a generic Mother’s Day card and that was it. I was at least hoping for a 1st Mother’s Day card or something more meaningful. I certainly tried to make a big deal out of Father’s Day for him. So I was a bitch and called him to say (besides other things) that I really hoped that baby D’s once a week sitter didn’t make more out of Mother’s Day than he would. I mean I think I’ve managed to get the day to myself, since he was prepared to visit his mother this Sunday. I stupidly asked why he wanted to visit and he told me ‘because it’s Mother’s Day’. Uh hello? Your wife is also a mother last time I checked! He’s called me materialistic in the past, but I’m not asking for diamonds and pearls (though I will gladly accept any that might be given) or anything. Just looking for a day when he pampers me a bit and shows me that he’s thankful that I’m his son’s Mother. I don’t think that’s unreasonable is it? I mean that is what the day’s about right?

Hubby’s birthday isn’t until June 5, but since I always try to get him something really great I tend to start early on the gift. He’s been going on and on about getting a PS3, but frankly we just can’t afford it. I mean, first of all we used to have a Super Nintendo and the original Playstation. Where are they now? Exactly. We eventually got sick of them and they (I believe) are currently sitting out in the garage waiting for a yard sale. Then looking at the cost of the system and then the games on top of that…not bloody likely. I figured the only reason he even wants a system is to play Gran Turismo again. You’d think that when he drives for a living that he wouldn’t want to play games that involve driving. Like I don’t think it would be much fun to play a game that involved answering phones or typing. Just me though.

So I checked out ebay and found an auction that had 23 games, 3 controllers, 2 guitars plus the PS2 with a high bid of $280.00. I tried to see if it was a good deal by checking the cost of the new system with the important games that hubby would’ve wanted from the 23: Gran Turismo 4, Grand Theft Auto (x4), Guitar Hero II, III and Encore: Rocks the 80′s. I couldn’t even find all the games for sale, but suffice to say that the system, GT4, GHIII plus 2 guitars was already over $300.00. So I put in a big of $300.00 max and won the auction for $290.00.

Since the guy listed that shipping would be from Toronto I asked if I could pick it up instead of paying the $30.00 for shipping. Unfortunately Toronto is a big city and he was clear on the other side of it from me. He offered to take $10.00 off if I’d still make the trip, which I did. That was Monday. When I got home I hinted that I had a really great gift for him and maybe he wanted it early. After all it was exactly 1 month to the day before his actual birthday. (I’m so horrible) I just couldn’t wait to give it to him. Besides he has Mondays off and we weren’t doing anything that afternoon. I couldn’t seem to convince him to totally give in, but he he’d think about it and maybe the following day I could give it to him. He was started complaining that he was feeling dizzy by dinnertime and ended up staying home from work yesterday.

Laying it on thick at lunch, I asked him if he wanted a piece of cake for dessert. He said he did, so I asked if he wanted “birthday cake”. He laughed and said ‘fine’. So I got the candle in the piece of cake and sang Happy Birthday for effect. When I got home on Monday with all the stuff I had it stashed downstairs at my Dad’s since he’s out of the country at the moment, so we agreed that he would change baby D and I’d get the gift ready. I made him close his eyes when he got downstairs and I had the games fanned out across the floor and was holding the guitar. When he opened his eyes it took him a minute to figure out what he was looking at and then he asked ‘you got me a PS3?’. “Nope sorry, just a PS2″. At which point he realized how many games there were and he was shocked.

So we played Guitar Hero III a bit downstairs while trying to keep one eye on baby D who was loving crawling around new surroundings. Then we managed to get the very heavy tv (which my Dad gave us since he bought an HDTV, but hadn’t bothered to move yet) up 2 levels to our bedroom, where I got everything rearranged and hooked up. We’ve managed to spend an exorbitant amount of time playing games over the last 2 days (yes he called in ‘sick’ again today).
