After a sweet 2 week holiday (spent at the exotic…home) I am finally going back to work tomorrow. Feels like I just left, I’m not really sure where the time went. I will say that it was relaxing though.
So I will rewind back to New Year’s Eve when my Dad took us out to dinner. We went to my favourite chinese restaurant Imperial Buffet. I had made the reservation the day before for 5 o’clock and thank goodness I did. You should have seen the mob of people we passed on our way out who were waiting to get seated. We always tend to get to a restaurant as early as we can for little D‘s sake. There is always less of a crowd and we can still get him home in plenty of time to have a decent bedtime. When we got home we opened our Christmas presents – yes we had not opened our gifts from dad or vice versa. Little D had pooped out when opening his gifts on Christmas day so I decided to cut things short and figured we would try again when he was more interested. In fact, he didn’t open his last gift until yesterday afternoon!
Saturday we drove to Paris (no not that Paris) to meet up with my Mum and do a little shopping at Mary Maxim. It’s one of the few great places left to buy good yarn so I go there whenever I get the urge to start a new project (thought I don’t tend to finish as many as I start). My new knitting project is going to be a prayer shawl for my retiring Principal who is moving on to become a pastor. I’m not totally sure it is appropriate as they are usually used for grieving or ill people who need prayers, but I figured he would at least see the thought behind the gift. While I was there I picked up an origami kit I had my eye on, and finally splurged and bought 2 cross stitch kits that I have been looking at for a while.

I have already started on the hands which will be for little D and then I’ll do the feet which will be for baby x.
The biggest news of the holiday is that I managed to get little D potty trained! Okay, not 100%, but pretty close. With the exception of the first night (Monday) he has been sleeping right through the night and waking up in the morning dry, which I think is really incredible. He hasn’t been in diapers since waking up Monday morning and since Tuesday, has only had 5 accidents. Now we’re still having issues pooping on the potty, but peeing seems to be a done deal. I think he daycare teacher is going to be thrilled. I just went out today to get him more underpants so that he will have a supply at daycare instead of diapers. They’re so cute too. I mean they don’t have anyone special on them like spiderman or anything, they’re just so small. I had to get him an XXS, but they’re still a wee bit too big for him. I am prouder than proud can be. I’ve heard the horror stories about how long it can take and all the pull-ups and bed wetting, but I just got him to throw away all his diapers (just figuratively, I’ve still got them bagged up for the next one) and told him that this was it, he’d have to do his best to get to the potty to do his business or he’d have wet underpants. You never cease to amaze me kid, you make me proud!

Yes, I’m gearing up for the end of the year (school year) madness. Even though I’m not back at work yet, I still have a bunch of stuff to do. Like tomorrow night is my school’s grad. Even though I haven’t been there for over a year, I promised the students that I would be back to announce the grads as they walk across the stage. This has always been my thing, and I really enjoy doing it. Besides they always seem to have a problem finding someone who can say some of the names. For instance Sathananthalingam is just the last name of one of our students. Her first name is still 12 characters long. I don’t seem to have much difficulty in saying these names so I’m always called upon when there’s a long name like that to pronounce. Then on Thursday is our end of the year staff breakfast. Even though I went last year, I think I’m going to beg off this year. I don’t really want to sit through all the goodbyes of staff I don’t really care about or know. Besides I anticipate it being difficult keeping a little guy who is *almost* walking still for like 4 hours. It’ll probably be more trouble than it’s worth and frankly I don’t care that much.

My mum was down for a couple of days and we had a really nice visit. This was the first time she stayed for more than one night. We decided the last time she was here that it didn’t make much sense to just stay for one night because it was all so rushed. We really didn’t do much. We managed to get out for a long walk and admire other people’s front gardens. It gave me all sorts of ideas for mine. And we had my brother and his wife over for dinner Saturday night. They left around 21:00 and my mum, dad, hubby and I stayed up till 23:00 talking about baby D and his birth. Even though it wasn’t that long ago (14 months) there were a couple things I had actually forgotten. I love reminiscing! Yesterday we went to church together and then came home and finally hung up some pictures I’ve been meaning to get on my walls. I will still have to get some more pictures as I have a humongous wall in my family room that could use some lovin’.

This time next Monday I will be at work. I am trying desperately not to think about it for fear that I will lose my mind. It’s only for 2 weeks; 9 days in fact so I’m sure I can do that. The worst will be when baby D goes into daycare and it’s a full time arrangement. If hubby was staying home with baby D the whole time as we had planned I probably wouldn’t be as nervous, but my Dad will be watching him for 3 days. I’m sure it doesn’t sound like a big deal, but he’s old-school German and tends to have his own way of doing things and criticizing mine. I guess I’m just afraid that he’ll be letting baby D scream himself to sleep or feeding him large chunks of stuff that he might choke on or possibly being too rough on him. I’ll just have to keep thinking happy thoughts that everything will go fine or I’m going to make myself sick thinking about it.

She always brings stuff for us whenever she comes, and this was no exception. She brought an adorable pair of white overalls with boats on them and a turquoise plastic deck chair (mini-sized) for baby D. She brought me a pot of assorted plants and her old plugin garden lights. We had a great time shopping for plants for my window boxes and pots. I am all gungho to rip out the prickly hedges in the front of the house and plant Spirea instead. It’s going to be a huge job since there are 4 hedges to be removed. Hopefully I can manage to get everything in my mind done before my Dad gets home. I’m going to keep this entry really short because I’m off to plant my window boxes.

Thought I’d start with DasBecca’s “Big Fake Meme” because I found it so amusing.

1. What song did you discover most recently?
“Stephanie” by Grand:PM. I saw them on Breakfast Television and thought they were great. Give them a listen.
2. What three songs are making the most rounds in your iTunes?
I actually still use WMP (version 9 if you can believe that) instead of iTunes (don’t throw things I just don’t like change) “Franklin” by Paramore, “Pressure” by Paramore, and “Cold” by Crossfade.
3. What song makes you the most emotional?
“Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson. It always strikes a nerve whenever I hear it.
4. What’s the last movie you watched?
“Shrek the Third” Just a few minutes ago actually. I liked it better than the first 2. Great watch.
5. What do you waste time looking at online when you’re alone? PORN? It’s porn, isn’t it?
Er, um. NO. Seriously no. I mostly look up baby stuff lately. Neat gadgets and such. I love this stuff for instance: Boon.
6. What did you dream about last night?
Gladly nothing. I’ve been having pretty bad nightmares lately. I’m so stressed out about returning to work after having baby D, so some of them are with that regard. Some of them are just your average being chased by a psychopathic killer variety.
7. What’s up with all these ads?
I’m just trying them out for the moment. If I can make a couple of bucks while blogging then why not? Besides the canned theme had that section pre-made, so I figured I would fill it.
8. What’s your fondest hope for the next year?
That I can get over this absolute dread of putting baby D in daycare and of me going back to work.
9. What are you wearing right now?
My blue flannel pj pants and La Senza nightshirt. It’s lazy, but what’s the point in getting dressed if I’m not leaving the house?
10. How lame is this meme?
I quite enjoyed it actually. Thanks Becca!

So I’ve managed to add a few things around here and hope to add more stuff as I get time. I was pretty busy this week (as my life goes anyway). Tuesday morning me and baby D went to his second WeeHands class. I’ve been signing on and off to him since he was a few weeks old (mostly just the sign for milk) but thought that a more structured class may be helpful. Last week there were only three of us with our little ones, but this week there were 7 mums and babies. The little girl next to us was already crawling and crawled right over to baby D and was trying to touch his face. It was so cute.

Wednesday I took the little man to the doctor’s for his 9 month checkup. I stupidly thought he had to get another set of shots so I ended up drugging the poor kid only to find out that there would be no shots until 12 months. DUH! Oh well, the good news is that he’s put on quite a bit of weight. His weight has always been low so his father especially has been worried. I just figured (like the doctor) that every kid is different and he’s totally healthy and happy so what’s the problem? So he went from 6.9 kilos in December to 8 kilos. What a little porkchop!

Then yesterday (Thursday) my church mums group started up again. I met with them from September through November to do a parenting video series “Honor in the Home” by Gary Smalley and this time we’re doing “Bringing Up Boys” by James Dobson. I really enjoy getting together with other women, but have to admit that I have to push myself to do it. I’m just not a social person I find.

My only issue with my weehands class and with the parenting group is that they are both in the morning. When baby D and I are home (which is most of the time), then he is totally on a schedule and everything is great. But when I throw outings into the mix it messes everything up. He can’t eat when he usually eats or nap when he usually naps. In fact both Tuesday and Thursday he didn’t have his afternoon nap at all and was oh so cranky because of it. I think it’s important for us both to get out, so I’ll just have to deal with it, but it is frustrating.

So I’m expecting my mum to come down either tonight after dinner or tomorrow morning. She’s bringing the sled she bought for him, which will be useful if we ever get any snow. The house is in pretty good order, but I always tend to go overboard cleaning when I know someone is coming over, so I’m off to clean…
